This year Guru Purnima is celebrated on 7th of July
Guru Pournima is a three day festival. Hindus celebrate on the full moon of ashada masam.
The great sage Vyasa who gave hindus the vedas, puranas, bhagavatam and mahabharatham is remembered and the masters were worshiped with reverence. The sage Vyasa is the master of the noble Dathatreya who is the master of masters.
This day is the first of 'chaturmasa' and hence an auspicious day for starting new studies. In ancient times the master and his disciples would settle down and reciet 'brahma sutras' during this period.
On this day disciples wakeup at the 'Brahmamuhurtha' 4 a.m in the morning and meditate on their guru. After cleansing themselves the bow to the gurus feet and recieve his blessings. The 'sadus' and 'sanyasis' (hermits) were offered food and other respects. The greatness of the guru is enlighted a thousand times on this day hence for the discipes who worship their guru's on this day recieve blessings a thousand fold in return.
